The plenary session of the Archena City Council claims the survival of the Tajo Segura transfer (29/07/2020)

Only the votes in favor of the Municipal People's Group showed support for the Central Union of Irrigators of the Tajo-Segura Transfer in their request not to modify the rules of exploitation of the Transfer. The Plenum of the City Council has approved, with the support of the Popular Party, to demand the maintenance of the Tajo-Segura transfer as "solidarity and structuring infrastructure of Spain, generator of wealth and key piece for the progress of our country". After the debate on the motion in plenary session, the mayor of Archena, Patricia Fernández López, expressed her concern: "The Tajo-Segura transfer is a decisive infrastructure for the development of agriculture in the Region, on which 150,000 jobs depend direct, and the cuts of water approved by the Ministry of Ecological Transition put an 'expiration date' ". The First Municipal Authority was also forceful in its position of support for the transfer, while surprised by the votes against the PSOE and the Mixed Group on the motion: "I will unconditionally and without political overtones support the farmers' demands archeneros, since they are an essential engine for the economy and employment of Archena.

" The agreements of the motion constitute a call for the Government of Spain to guarantee the durability of the Tajo-Segura transfer, providing it with greater stability, and show its support to irrigators and farmers from Archeneros, mobilizing and making available all possible water resources. For its part, according to the mayor of Archena, "the Government of the Nation does not row in the same direction as the Archena farmers" since "it is finalizing the tender for the project to interconnect the desalination plants of Torrevieja, Valdelentisco and Águilas between them and with the post-transfer channel Tajo-Segura in Ojós in 2021 ". The end result will be more expensive irrigation by mixing desalinated water at 0.60 euros / m3 with that of the transfer (0.12 euros / m3).

"We are totally against this decision.

We want guarantees for the operation of the transfer: quality water and at a competitive price for our farmers," concluded Patricia Fernández.
